TikTok KOL marketing gives Hong Kong brands two routes: TikTok to reach audiences outside Hong Kong, such as Southeast Asia, Taiwan and overseas travellers, and Douyin to reach Mainland consumers and visitors planning a trip to Hong Kong. Both belong to ByteDance and both run on short video and recommendation algorithms, but their users, rules and partnership tools are completely separate. Creators on Connector Club can link their TikTok accounts through TikTok's official authorization, so brands see data supplied by the platform itself. Douyin is outside our data coverage.
The role of TikTok and Douyin in Hong Kong
TikTok announced in July 2020 that it would stop operating its app in Hong Kong. For a local Hong Kong audience, TikTok is not the main channel, and Instagram Reels usually reaches people more directly (see Instagram KOL). TikTok's value is in going overseas: when a brand wants to take a product into markets like Southeast Asia, or wants overseas travellers to discover Hong Kong restaurants, hotels and attractions, it can work with creators who have audiences in those markets.
Douyin is a different story. It is the Mainland short-video platform, and Mainland visitors search Douyin and Xiaohongshu for things to do in Hong Kong before they travel. For cross-border businesses in retail, food, hotels and beauty, Douyin works as the Mainland version of a word-of-mouth channel.
TikTok vs Douyin
TikTok
- Audience: international and Southeast Asian users outside Hong Kong
- Official creator marketplace: TikTok One (formerly Creator Marketplace)
- Amplification: Spark Ads, which run a creator's original post as an ad

Douyin
- Audience: Mainland users, including people planning to visit Hong Kong
- Official creator marketplace: Xingtu (巨量星圖)
- Content is mostly in Simplified Chinese and Mainland usage
- Connector Club: no Douyin data, so ask creators for it directly
TikTok content formats and what each is good for
On TikTok and Douyin, the algorithm decides who sees a video, and whether it gets pushed to strangers depends heavily on holding viewers in the first few seconds. The same product is filmed very differently for TikTok than for Instagram.
Common TikTok creator formats
- Short videos (15–60 seconds)The core format. Good for unboxings, before-and-afters, day-in-the-life vlogs and "three reasons why" pitches. The first three seconds need a hook.
- Photo carouselsSeveral photos set to music. Cheap to produce and good for menus, itineraries and product ranges.
- LIVEReal-time demos and Q&A, good for launches or limited-time offers.
- Duet and StitchOther users remix the creator's clip, which suits challenges and trending topics.
- SeriesOne creator films several parts, such as "30 days of trying it", for products that take time to show results.
- Spark AdsThe brand gets the creator's authorization code and runs a well-performing original post as an ad, keeping comments and engagement on the original.

Partnership models and creator tiers
TikTok's algorithm gives creators with small followings a real chance to go viral, so many brands use a mix of a few mid-tier creators and many nano creators and KOCs, then boost the best-performing videos with Spark Ads. Common models:
- Single paid video: The most common. Pricing is usually close to an Instagram Reel.
- Series or long-term partnership: The same creator posts regularly to build awareness. See always-on creator programmes.
- Product seeding: Product instead of cash, suited to many KOCs trying a product. See product seeding.
- Ad usage rights: An extra fee so the brand can run the creator's video as an ad.
A TikTok video is usually priced about the same as the creator's Instagram Reel. You can estimate a budget with the KOL rate estimator. Douyin is priced in RMB, and fees for orders placed through Xingtu follow its official terms.
TikTok ad disclosure rules
Commercial content on TikTok needs the branded content option turned on under the content disclosure setting when posting, and the video then shows a "Paid partnership" label. Product seeding is still a commercial relationship and must be disclosed. Collaborations ordered through Xingtu on Douyin follow Douyin's rules for commercial labelling. Both platforms change their rules often, so check the in-app settings before posting.
Hong Kong has no law written specifically for creators, but the Trade Descriptions Ordinance prohibits false or misleading trade descriptions. Write into the contract that the creator must turn on the paid partnership label and mention the partnership on screen or out loud at the start of the video.
How to evaluate a TikTok creator
Follower counts mean less on TikTok than elsewhere, because videos are mainly distributed by recommendation. Look for consistency rather than one viral hit:
Check before you hire a TikTok creator
- Average views across the last 10 videos, not just the best one
- Whether the ratio of views to followers is stable, or spikes on a few videos
- Whether the audience location matches your target market (ask for an analytics screenshot)
- Whether comments discuss the content, rather than strings of emoji
- How past sponsored videos performed compared with everyday ones
- Whether the first three seconds hook viewers, and whether the style fits your brand
Work out engagement with the engagement rate calculator.

FAQ
Do Hong Kong brands still need TikTok creators?
It depends on your audience. TikTok announced in 2020 that it would stop operating its app in Hong Kong, so local campaigns usually centre on Instagram. If you want to reach Southeast Asia, Taiwan or overseas travellers, TikTok creators are still very useful.
What is the difference between TikTok and Douyin creators?
Both belong to ByteDance, but their users and systems are separate. TikTok serves international users and its official creator marketplace is TikTok One. Douyin serves Mainland users and its official marketplace is Xingtu.
How much does a TikTok creator cost?
A video usually costs about the same as an Instagram Reel, for example HK$2,000–9,000 for a micro creator with 10K–50K followers, depending on tier, production and usage rights. The KOL rate estimator gives a starting range.
What are Spark Ads?
A TikTok ad format. Once the creator shares an authorization code, the brand can run the creator's original post as an ad, and engagement builds on the original post. Put usage rights and duration in the contract.
Does Connector Club have Douyin data?
No. Connector Club's official data comes from Meta, TikTok and YouTube. For Douyin creators, ask for screenshots from their back end or check through Xingtu.
